This Investors Group Walk for Memories is dedicated to a special member of our community, Vivian Anderson.
Born in 1915, Vivian “Viv” Anderson grew up in the South Granville area of Vancouver with a bright, enquiring mind. Denied university because of the Depression, she delighted in life-long learning at libraries, night school, UBC summer courses, Brock House and West Van Senior Centre “coffee” discussion groups. Viv was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1998. A fierce protector of grammar and words – for over 40 years, she kept a list of the correct pronunciation of troublesome words – she retained her language and social skills long after Alzheimer’s had begun to change her brain and personality. Viv died peacefully from a stroke on a summer evening in 2003. The Friendship Garden she inspired at Inglewood Care Centre where she lived – a safe and happy place for those with dementia and their families – blooms with lilacs every Mother’s Day.
