This Investors Group Walk for Memories is dedicated to a special member of our community, Walter "Wally" Furphy.

Walter “Jolly Wally” Furphy was born in 1923 in Ontario. He served in the army for several years and eventually moved to Hinton, Alberta, where he met and married his wife of nearly 50 years, Grace. Although they’ve always been active in their community, Wally’s diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease in 2000 turned himself and Grace into strong advocates for people with the disease. They’ve pushed for coverage of treatment medications both with the provincial government and with Veterans Affairs Canada. Now 84, Wally still lives at home with Grace and other family members who share the same home. Although the disease is now advanced, sometimes when asked how he’s doing he’ll still give his characteristic reply: “Best in the West”, he’ll say with a big smile.
