The Glass Seed: The Fragile Beauty of Heart, Mind & Memory
By Eileen Delehanty Pearkes. Kootenay Bay, BC: Timeless Books, 2007. (170 pages)

The Glass Seed focuses on the decline of the author’s mother. The author spends most of the book focusing on the emotional ramifications of her mother’s disease on both her and her family. She uses flashbacks to juxtapose the way her mother acted when she was younger and how she begins to behave as the disease progresses.

The author does an excellent job of using metaphors to describe a given situation or feeling. She has a unique way of telling the story by likening her journey to the changing of seasons. Often these metaphors help the reader understand what the author was going through at that time. At other times, the metaphors can get quite long and seem to take away from the message of the book.

The main purpose of the book is for the author to tell her story and her experiences with dementia. This book is well-written and would be useful to many people dealing with dementia. Someone would likely want to buy this book if they enjoyed figurative writing.
