On January 4 we will usher in the New Year with the launch of Alzheimer Awareness Month. The focus of this year’s national campaign centred around findings from a survey of Canadian baby boomers that revealed our population’s largest demographic is not prepared for the rising tide of dementia. This is particularly troubling given that the first wave of baby boomers turns 65 this year and age is still the single largest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.
Whereas the Rising Tide was a wake-up call for everyone, the survey findings are a clear indicator there is more that needs to be done.
In 2011, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. will continue to advance our mission by increasing the impact and reach of our education programs and support services, increasing our funding for research to find the causes and cure for dementia, and initiative productive partnerships to help improve dementia care in our province.
We need your help to create a world without Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Learn more about the survey findings.
We are urging everyone to increase their awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias so as to take better care of their brain health and help loved ones recognize when memory loss should be a concern and medical consultation is needed. Up-to-date and useful information is just a click away on this website including the warning signs and help with building a healthy brain plan.
We know that the prevalence of dementia is set to increase and the need for support will grow. Whether you are participating in the Investors Group Walk for Memories on January 30, volunteer in one of our Resource Centres across the province, or are a loyal donor, your support is making a difference to more than 70,000 British Columbians who are already on the dementia journey. Your continued support means that the Alzheimer Society of B.C. will be able to sustain our committing to providing Help for Today. Hope for Tomorrow…®
Sincerely,
Jean Blake
