Each of the
Walks was dedicated to an Honoree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.
This
Investors Group Walk for Memories was dedicated to
Wenche and Jack Hemphill.

Jack was born in New York City, U.S.A. in 1926 and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. He joined the United States Navy in World War II. After the war, Jack became known as “Jack of all trades.”
Jack obtained a degree in Biology from Princeton University, he worked as a researcher in the pharmaceutical industry; as a partner at a construction company building houses in Princeton, New Jersey; he worked as a programmer with IBM and as an underwriter on Wall Street. After coming to Victoria, B.C. in 1972, he worked for a while as a mortgage broker, and later volunteered in the Biology Department at University of Victoria. He also joined the Sierra Club of B.C. where he stayed for over 40 years, eventually becoming an active member of the Board.
Jack is a very easy-going guy who loves the outdoors. Canoeing, hiking, and skiing were favourite pastimes. He is known for being a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His great sense of humour makes him a joy to be around.
The Hemphill family is involved in caregiver support groups, Minds in Motion™, “Pathways” day programs and various other seminars and talks. Jack has made many friends through Minds in Motion and it has been an invaluable learning experience for him and his family.
Thanks for
Walking Victoria – for Wenche and Jack Hemphill and the more than 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia.
