Caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia is a demanding and sometimes difficult journey, requiring hard work, patience and compassion.
In acknowledgement of their commitment, Gerry Matier, together with his wife Dede (Diane) Jamieson, are the honourees for this year’s Investors Group Walk for Memories. Gerry, who is currently the Executive Director of the Insurance Council of British Columbia, married his wife, Dede in 1980. In 2001, Dede was diagnosed with dementia (primary progressive aphasia). Gerry immediately connected with the Alzheimer Society of B.C. and took care of Dede until her condition required her placement in a long-term care facility.
“In the beginning, the Alzheimer Society helped me understand Dede’s form of dementia. Later, when I was struggling with my role, I joined a caregiver support group which helped me regain focus. The Society has since called on me to give talks to help others better understand the caregiver role which I’m always glad to do,” said Gerry.
