We need mature, interested and empathetic individuals to work with us as One - One Support Volunteers. Positions are available in our White Rock, Langley, North Fraser (Burnaby), Vancouver and Victoria Resource Centres.
The One-One Support Volunteer provides support and information both in person and by phone to caregivers and people with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia who visit or phone the Alzheimer Resource Centre.
Responsbilities include:
In person or over the phone, provide empathetic support and information on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to caregivers, people with early symptoms of dementia and the general public
Liaise with staff to advise of pertinent issues and, as needed, for support in addressing concerns requiring further response
Screen caregivers and people with early symptoms of dementia for attendance at support groups, in accordance with the Society’s screening guidelines
Keep current with information on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, caregiving issues and current research
Keep current in knowledge of available community resources most commonly involved in support of persons with dementia and their family
Track calls for statistics
Qualifications/Requirements
Excellent verbal communication skills and empathetic listening skills
Knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and community resources
Formal or informal caregiving experience an asset
Willingness to continuously learn about dementia and resources available to support individuals with dementia and family caregivers
Previous experience in operation of office equipment, computers (Word, Excel), and general office organization helpful.
Fluent in English; additional language(s) an asset
Time Commitment
Daytime availability is required
One three-hour shift per week
Must attend regularly scheduled volunteer meetings and training sessions
