2011 Port Alberni Walk
Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.
The 2011 Port Alberni Investors Group Walk for Memories was dedicated to Margaret Souther.
Almost 20 years ago Margaret Souther’s mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and she became an active caregiver. At the time she felt desperate for support and information and through the Alzheimer Society of B.C. (ASBC), Margaret attended support groups and began to feel more prepared and able to cope.
After her mother-in-law passed away, Margaret was determined to give back some of the support she received from the Alzheimer Society of B.C., so she became a volunteer support group facilitator. Through her own experience, Margaret understands the support needed by families on the dementia journey. The combination of her personal experience and the training from ASBC allows her to facilitate understanding within the families.
Margaret’s goal was to provide support and there is no doubt that she has already made many lives easier and a little better for families on the dementia journey.
