The Passion of Loving: The Congruent Compassionate Approach In Caring for People with Loss of Autonomy
By Micheline Paré, Montréal: Paulines, 2005. (89 Pages)

The Congruent Compassionate Approach promotes the creation of a special connection between the senior without autonomy and the Caregiver.

This book is primarily written for healthcare workers who care for voiceless seniors. The author suggests that the caregiver have a relationship with the person who has dementia. However, the author assumes that the person with dementia is still able to teach us and give back in the relationship.

The Author also assumes that extra time needs to be given in caring for PWD:

“According to the Congruent Compassionate Approach, the art of caregiving is based on a personal initiative undertaken by caregivers: they choose to commit themselves to a benevolent relationship founded upon respect for everyone.” (p.31)

This book represents an ‘ideal’ way to interact. In reading this book, some health care workers may feel it is not based in reality, especially considering the cutbacks and stresses our healthcare system is experiencing.

The style of writing is fairly “artsy.” However, the book is still worth reading. In a subtle, gentle way, this book impacts you.
