2011 North Island Walk

Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

The 2011 North Island Investors Group Walk for Memories was dedicated to Joan Austad.

One of 8 siblings growing up on a cattle and strawberry farm on Lulu Island, Joan always had an outgoing personality. Her love for traveling made it easier to move around the country for husband Jack’s search and rescue career, taking their family to Whitehorse, Greenwood and Edmonton before settling in the Comox Valley in 1969.

During her 20 plus-year career as a registered nurse, Joan was known for her wonderful bedside manner and compassion, which showed in her work. She took challenges in stride, and even after her diagnosis, Joan was determined to maintain a great sense of humor and her love of people, wildlife, and nature.

Through the Alzheimer Society of B.C., Joan’s family was able to gain information and education to help support Joan’s radiant spirit during her dementia journey, a quality for which she will always be fondly remembered.
