When Linda called her son Glen in Vancouver to tell him she saw a news segment on TV featuring the “memories in ice sculptures” on display for World Alzheimer’s Day, and that she thought it was a great idea, he admits her approval meant a lot. Not only because he was part of the creative team behind the display, but because his family is on the dementia journey and this was a great sign that the company he works for is doing the right thing.

Seeing how few people know about dementia, Rethink Communications, one of Canada’s top creative and rebranding strategists, has been volunteering their award-winning expertise and company time to support the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

In addition to the ice sculptures, during Alzheimer Awareness month in January, Rethink put up a big 30 ft “wall of stickies” with 1,000 post-it notes arranged to spell the word “remember” in order to get the public’s attention about the disease.

“There are numerous people at Rethink who have a personal connection to dementia, whether having had family members with a form of dementia or knowing someone currently impacted by it,” explained Glen. “One of the founding partners saw a great need to create awareness and it’s pretty cool that our entire company is behind this.”

Rethink’s creative spin on the rising tide of dementia has not only generated more awareness here at home, but has garnered attention outside of Canada. The remember board was flagged as a top outdoor ad by bestadsontv.com, and Japan’s Nikkei Business Magazine followed up with a story about the stunt and the fundraising event it was promoting.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have big names like Rethink Communications, Shaw Communications, and Bob Lenarduzzi of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC donating resources and volunteering time to our cause,” said Jean Blake, CEO, Alzheimer Society of B.C. “It makes possible marketing initiatives that are bigger than what our own resources may allow, which means we can raise awareness and reach even more people.”
