Each of the Walks was dedicated to an Honoree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.

This Investors Group Walk for Memories was dedicated to Henriette Ethier.

Henriette Ethier was born in Domremy, Saskatchewan in 1915 into a deeply religious family. She developed a great love of music at an early age, and would visit her Uncle’s home to play the piano. Due to her mother’s poor health, Henriette gave up pursuing an education in Grade 4 in order to help at home. She was baking bread and pies by the age of nine and is remembered fondly for her work ethic and service to others.

Henriette met Louis Ethier and they married in October of 1936. They had six children and in 1958, relocated to Little Prairie, B.C. (now Chetwynd). Here, Henriette was a homemaker and took on many jobs outside the home including babysitting, laundry, cleaning and sewing to help provide for her family. She was also a dedicated member of the Catholic Women’s League, and provided meals for the clergy. Henriette is remembered for her wise saying, “Hard work won’t hurt you.”

Henriette lost her husband Louis after 65 years of marriage in 2001, and had to adjust to life without him and relied on the support of her children to do so. In 2008, she went to live at Pouce Coupe Care Home and later Rotary Manor in Dawson Creek, where she received care for dementia.

Henriette’s love for music was a constant throughout her life and she retained this until the end of her life, and participated in all musical activities at her care home.

Thanks for Walking Chetwynd - for Henriette Ethier and the more than 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia.
