Health-care providers are important partners of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Together, we can ensure that people with dementia and their families are receiving person-centred care and support throughout the different stages of the disease.

This section of the website contains useful resources for health-care providers who are supporting people with dementia in residential care facilities, in their homes, or in other care settings.

Please see the resources listed below, as well as the "Helpful Links" section located on the right panel of this page.

Making the Connection

Making the Connection is an education program designed for health-care providers working in the community or in a facility. It is intended to be delivered by experienced health-care educators with a strong background in dementia care.

The program is composed of two parts: The Dementia Experience and the Making the Connection workshop.

The Dementia Experience is a unique educational opportunity which allows health-care providers to “walk in the shoes” of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Participants are guided through a series of everyday tasks while having their senses restricted in a variety of ways.

Individuals who participate in The Dementia Experience will have an opportunity to engage in debriefing as part of the proceeding Making the Connection workshop.  The workshop provides basic information, validates previous knowledge, and reinforces values and beliefs around person-centered care.

Health-Care Providers: The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is pleased to offer you access to materials which can be used to conduct a Making the Connection program of your own for your staff team. Materials include:
  • PowerPoint presentation
  • Presenter’s notes for the Making the Connection workshop
  • Manual for facilitating a Dementia Experience
  • Handout package for participants

These materials will only be made available to health-care educators working within the B.C. health authorities, dementia educators at universities and colleges, and non-profit health-care organizations providing dementia education to their front-line care staff.

Making the Connection was originally developed in 2005 by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. The Society would like to acknowledge the Interior Health Authority, which helped to revise the program in 2009/ 2010 and implemented the program and conducted a formal evaluation between January and March 2010, as part of a B.C. Health Education Fund initiative.

Guidelines for Care: Person-centred care of people with dementia living in care homes

The Guidelines for Care were developed by the Alzheimer Society of Canada as an initiative to improve the quality of care of people with dementia in care homes through a person-centred philosophy.

The Alzheimer Society believes that people with dementia have the right to enjoy the highest possible quality of life and quality of care by being engaged in meaningful relationships which are based on equality, understanding, sharing, participation, collaboration, dignity, trust and respect.

The Guidelines for Care framework is the evidence based foundation and is meant to act as an academic paper rather than a guidebook. Ultimately, this document will lead to the development of knowledge transfer tools to strengthen the capacity of care home staff to ensure a person-centred philosophy in care and to increase the potential for knowledge integration.
