HOW OUR ADVOCATES HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE

However, because people like you have shared their stories or experiences and made time to connect with decision-makers in your community, attention to dementia care in B.C. has changed dramatically over the last decade.

KEY ISSUES

To Implement the Dementia Service Framework:

  • The Dementia Service Framework is a blueprint that sets out a vision: that people living with dementia will lead full lives, through a shared passion for action by all stakeholders.
  • The government must continue to support the implementation of this important work.

To Change the Culture of Care in Residential Care:

  • To honour the quality of life for people with dementia who are living in long-term care facilities, we need to see transformational change that will ensure person-centered care and services that are deinstitutionalized.
  • The provincial government must commit to further research into delivering high quality care and to improve the delivery of care in facilities, and to change the general culture of care. <Link to Changing the Culture of Care…Doc.>

To Provide End-of-Life Care for People with Dementia:

  • End-of-life care for a person with dementia requires an active and compassionate approach. This care should comfort and support not just the person with dementia, but also their family and caregivers.
  • The provincial government must include people affected by dementia in end-of-life programs. <Link to Caring for People with Dementia at End of Life Doc.>
