Ron Cannan, M.P. for the Kelowna - Lake Country riding, made a statement regarding the Investors Group Walk for Memories in the House of Commons last week. Mr. Cannan was at the Kelowna Walk on Jan. 29, where he said it was his honour to cut the ribbon which officially commenced the Walk.

Mr. Cannan reminded the House that more than 500,000 Canadians live with some form of dementia, and that the disease will be an increasing concern for our aging population.

“Almost 20 per cent of our population in the Okanagan is 65 years of age or older,” he said, “and the sad reality is that after the age of 65, the odds of developing Alzheimer doubles every five years.”

Mr. Cannan thanked the organizers, supporters and volunteers at the Kelowna Walk, and made a touching plea to everyone present in the House of Commons.

“With everyone working together, there is hope for a cure,” he said. “Remember to live each day to the fullest, and cherish your memories.”
