What is one way to get someone’s attention? Go big. That’s what the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is doing following the recent release of survey findings that show alarmingly low public awareness of the warning signs and risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
On Jan. 17, a 30ft long wall with 1,000 sticky notes arranged to spell the word “remember” will be unveiled at the promenade of the downtown Vancouver Public Library.
“We wanted to do something that would help people get a sense that the rising tide of dementia is very real and very big,” said Ian Grais of Rethink Communications who helped come up with the idea.
Each of the 1,000 removable sticky notes has its own reminder printed on it: Don’t forget the Investors Group Walk for Memories. The public will be encouraged to further aid their own memory by taking a removable sticky home with them. As the sticky notes are removed, the display will eventually fade like the memories held by a person living with dementia.
“We’re encouraging British Columbians to think of the more than 70,000 families living with dementia in our province, and to take action for their own brain health and at the same time support our efforts to find the causes and cure for dementia,” says Jean Blake, CEO, Alzheimer Society of B.C.
The Investors Group Walk for Memories is taking place in 20 communities across the province on Jan. 30 and funds raised will go to support families on the dementia journey as well as research to find the causes and cure for dementia.
The 30ft installation was built by Richmond-based The Portables who donated all materials and time to help with this initiative.
