Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. In Victoria, the 2009 Honourees were Ellen Rae Farris and Jacquie Farris.
Born in 1926, Ellen Rae Farris married her husband Sinclair in Chase, B.C., and had two daughters: Jacquie and Robbie. Always positive, Ellen enjoyed gardening, walking and cycling and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her beloved Sinclair died in 1996. To this day, Ellen finds ways to reach out to others, especially the elderly, and is always ready to “lend a hand” to all she meets.
In 1990 Ellen began experiencing memory problems, and was later diagnosed with Vascular Dementia.
“As the honourees, Mom and I represent everyone living with Alzheimer’s. The Walk is a chance to share how the Society is educating people to live well with the disease. Mom attended the Early Stage Support Group to give and receive support, and I learned that the cornerstone of caregiving is learning how to support Mom while caring for myself,” said Ellen’s daughter Jacquie.
