Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. In Vancouver, the 2009 Honouree was Elaine Wright.
At the age of 47, Elaine Wright was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In the years since her diagnosis, she has committed herself to promoting dementia awareness.
Elaine works closely with the Alzheimer Society of B.C. She was a member of the Board of Directors, and was the first known person with Alzheimer’s to trek Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the Ascent for Alzheimer’s fundraiser. Elaine is a spokesperson for Alzheimer’s disease with government, media, and at conferences.
“The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is assisting people with dementia to be the best they can be,” said Elaine. “The Society is committed to finding the causes and the cure.”
“I’m pleased to be the honouree for the 2009 Vancouver Walk because the awareness it creates is a chance to educate people about dementia, and to put a face on this disease. On January 25 I’ll be walking for my Mom, who also had Alzheimer’s disease.”
