In Honour of Pearl Farenholtz

Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. In Nelson, the 2009 Honouree was Pearl Farenholtz.

Pearl Farenholtz was born in Manitoba in 1912. She met Fritz in Nelson and they were married in 1935 – a marriage that would last 68 years. Pearl enjoyed her garden, camping and playing bridge. She was a woman of warmth and grace who loved her family and community. Pearl was an active member of her church, volunteered with the hospital auxiliary and visited the sick.

When she was in her 80s, Pearl began experiencing memory problems and had increasing difficulty carrying out routine tasks. With loving care from Fritz, she was able to stay in her own home until she was 89, when she moved to a care home. Pearl passed away in 2003.

“During Pearl’s final years, I found Linda and the staff at the Society’s office in Nelson so helpful in supplying me with valuable information and support,” Fritz, who passed away in 2007, once commented.
