Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. In Kelowna, the 2009 Honouree was Gabrielle Demay.
Born in New Brunswick in 1920, Gabrielle Demay worked as a registered nurse and later in financial management. A world-class duplicate bridge player, Gabrielle was a volunteer for St. Jean Baptiste Parish in Regina where she became a lay minister.
Gabrielle began experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease more than 20 years ago and was diagnosed in 2006. Gabrielle cared for her sister and brother who both had Alzheimer’s before she became too ill herself.
“Our family has really benefited from the Alzheimer Society’s education and support,” said Gabrielle’s son Paul. “The Walk is a great opportunity to educate people about the symptoms of the disease and to promote early diagnosis so people like Mom can maintain a dignified and productive quality of life.”
