Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. The 2009 Fraser Valley Honouree was John Teichgrab.
Born in Russia in 1923, John Teichgrab and his wife Patricia raised their six children in the Fraser Valley. John has a love of life, the outdoors, and his family. Known for his positive attitude and humour, John worked as a correctional officer at Chilliwack Forest Camps, and gave back to his community as a church deacon and sports referee.
After John and Patricia worked through the disease alone for many years, John was finally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1999. He has lived in residential care since 2006.
“Because of the Alzheimer Society and events like the Walk, there is more awareness and more support available for families living with dementia who are trying to make it through another day with dignity,” said Patricia. “We could not have coped with all the effects of this disease without the Society and the staff at the Chilliwack office.”
