Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honouree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. The 2009 Cowichan Valley Honouree was caregiver Bernadette Conroy.
Caregiver Bernadette Conroy was born in Ireland in 1934. She and her husband Noel came to Canada in 1967 and raised their children Maeve, Julie and CJ.
In 1988 Noel began to experience symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. With her children’s support, Bernadette turned to the Alzheimer Society, and joined a support group.
“The support group was invaluable—talking with others who were experiencing this unforgiving disease helped relieve the loneliness and helplessness,” said Bernadette.
A longtime Society volunteer, Bernadette gave tirelessly to others with humour and kindness as a support group facilitator, community contact, and event volunteer at fundraisers, including the Walk.
Bernadette cared for Noel for years at home, and later was very involved while he was in care. We recognize Bernadette, and other caregivers as unsung heroes, who persevere with love and patience in the face of this disease that takes their loved ones from them.
