Each of the Walks is dedicated to an Honoree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.
This Investors Group Walk for Memories was dedicated to Jory and Robin Mitchell.
Jory and Robin Mitchell have been married for 32 years and have never been more in love with each other. Both had careers as teachers in Port Alberni. Jory began teaching in the shops and later taught math and computers for 33 years while Robin taught music at the elementary level for 32 years until her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease led to a long-term leave.
The couple has been very involved with their church and community throughout the years. Robin began and then coordinated the Festival of Choirs in Port Alberni for 29 years and also started Choirfest which continues to this day. Jory learned to do illusions and tricks and used these tools when speaking with and teaching youths through the church.
After Robin’s diagnosis, the couple moved to Vancouver where both their daughters reside. Their daughters are an incredible support and their two grandsons have become a terrific ‘therapy’. They have also found the Alzheimer Society of B.C. support groups and education sessions to be very valuable while coping with the disease. “The groups give me an understanding of the disease and support me emotionally. I’m given strategies to help me love and care for my wife more effectively,” says Jory.
Vancouver walked for Jory and Robin Mitchell and the more than 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia.
