Each of the
Walks is dedicated to an Honoree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.
This
Investors Group Walk for Memories is dedicated to
Helene Parker.

Helene Parker was born just outside of Burns Lake, in Forestdale, B.C. on Nov. 23, 1929 to Olaf and Violet Hultkrans.
At 18, Helene moved to Smithers and became a bookkeeper for Hoskins Ford Sales where she met the love of her life, Frank Parker.
Helene was a homemaker as her children were growing up but she also worked part time at Central Clothing for many years and did so right up until their doors closed.
She was a social and outgoing person that everyone knew and adored. She was an active volunteer for Minor Hockey as well as a member of the Royal Purple Ladies. She soon became the community “Granny” and the door to her home was always open. There were even class field trips to her house to make homemade ice cream with a crank ice cream maker.
Cooking and baking for everyone, as well as singing, dancing and spending time with her husband, three children, six grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren are just a few of Helene’s favorite pastimes.
In 2008, Helene was diagnosed with dementia and it progressed rapidly. In 2010 she went to live at the Bulkley Lodge where she is cared for by wonderful staff. A year later, her daughter Jean was diagnosed with an aggressive form of dementia at the age of 61.
Let’s get walking Smithers - for Helene Parker and the more than 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia.
