Each of the Walks was dedicated to an Honoree – a person who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

This Investors Group Walk for Memories was dedicated to Deach Tetarenko.

Deach Tetarenko grew up in Saskatchewan and Powell River, before settling in Port Alberni in 1972 with his wife, Kathy, and raising their three daughters there. Deach was active in soccer, baseball and track throughout school and later coached his daughters in soccer and softball.

He had a successful 44 year career with Macmillan Bloedel where he established the first Employee Assistance Program and counselled many retirees. He continued to assist others after retiring, serving on the Port Alberni Adjustment Committee, Regional Health Board, Community Health Council, Drug and Alcohol Board, Tall Timbers Association and Alzheimer Society of B.C. Board.

Deach and Kathy participated in Alzheimer Society of B.C. support groups through his mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease and upon Deach’s diagnosis. The understanding, compassion and support of their friends and family were invaluable. He touched many people and is remembered fondly; indeed, it is difficult to go anywhere in Port Alberni without meeting someone who knew Deach.

Port Alberni walked for Deach Tetarenko and the more than 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia.
